Featured on today's blog; Elisabeth Gibson of Granville Flower Company, based out of Granville, OH! I had the pleasure of working with Elisabeth at a recent styled shoot in December at the Hilton Downtown. Her flowers were as vibrant as her personality and her arrangements were incredibly unique and allowed her personality to shine through! She was extremely professional, knowledgable and in tune with what she was looking for to provide the right arrangements for our "styled" look! I highly recommend her for all your floral needs, she never ceases to amaze me! Below are sample images of her work and also some portraits of Elisabeth so you can familiarize yourself with her face!
Q: What is your favorite flower and why?
A: That is an ever-changing answer. Today I would say ranunculus. I love all their layers. They are delicate and romantic. I am trying to grow them for the first time this year. I planted Amandine and La Belle series in pastels and white. Fingers crossed!
Q: What inspired you to start Granville Flower Co?
A: Long story! We were in contract to buy 21 acres that we planned to build a house on. As we were thinking about what to do with all the land, I decided I would do something with flowers because I have enjoyed planting flower gardens and landscaping at the homes we have owned. These were always perennials though and I knew I didn't want to become a landscaper or designer, so I started to do some research on jobs with growing flowers. This led me to flower farming and I became a member of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers. I started reading everything I could find on the topic and planning my farm. The 21 acres fell through but we found a 4 acre spot that was even better, so it all worked out in the end.
Q: What is your approach to working with clients?
A: I like to hear ideas of what colors and styles they like and then build an inspiration board to share. I ask them to do the same and then we meet face to face to go over things and decide a plan.
Q: Can you work around anyone’s budget?
A: To some extent. If I can't meet their wish list, we can discuss alternative flowers to use to cut costs or different styles that might work better for their budget. I am also open to selling buckets of flowers for clients that want to DIY.
Q: What kind of services do you offer?
A: Weddings, events, and everyday flowers. I offer subscriptions for homes or businesses so that they can have a new arrangement weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.
Q: Do you offer services of drying/framing flowers after an event?
A: No one has asked me to do this yet. I wouldn't be opposed to it, I would just want to do all my research to make sure it's done right.
Q: What does a day in the life of Granville Flower Co look like?
A: I'm a mom first, so that takes up the majority of my day. I have three kids, ages 9, 6 and 3. I try to make time for myself by attending CrossFit about 5 days a week. In terms of business, I follow florist and flower farming groups on FB and skim those to catch up on tips and tricks. Since my flowers won't be ready until spring, I usually visit a wholesaler weekly to fill orders.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: This is my second year, so I know I will have grown tremendously in 5 more years. I love growing flowers and designing with them. I just want to keep honing my skills and growing my client list.
Q: What do you find most challenging in your profession?
A: For me it's living in Ohio and not being able to grow everything I want to year round. I love when I can just go outside and cut from my own flowers.
Q: What is your favorite part of being a business owner?
A: I am doing what I want to do and for the most part I make my own schedule.
Q: How can our readers stay in touch with you?
A: In whatever way they are comfortable! Phone/text: 614-425-0705, the website: www.granvilleflowercompany.com or through Facebook Messenger: https://www.facebook.com/granvilleflowercompany
